Organization Mission

The United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV) manages and implements the United Nations programme on the peaceful uses of outer space and supports UNOV/UNODC with various operational services.

As part of the United Nations Office at Vienna, the Information Technology Service (ITS) through its India Technology Hub (ITH) forms part of the ITS’s vital delivery pillars in keeping with the UN’s revised ICT strategy and is responsible for Information Technology Support, focusing on innovative, sustainable, affordable and robust digital solutions, cybersecurity measures and trainings to meet UNOV/UNODC requirements, also enabling availability of the solutions more generally across the UN Secretariat entities and beyond.

Context

This assignment supports the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) solutions at the India Technology Hub (ITH), UNOV, to enhance digital services and promote innovation across the United Nations system. As ITH expands its portfolio of AI-enabled applications and automation initiatives, support is needed to develop, test, and improve AI/ML models while maintaining high standards of technical documentation and collaboration.

The Online Volunteers will contribute to ongoing AI/ML projects by assisting with data preparation, model development and evaluation, technical documentation, and code reviews under the guidance of the India Technology Hub team. Working collaboratively with experienced developers, they will gain practical experience while supporting the delivery of innovative, scalable, and sustainable digital solutions that strengthen organizational efficiency and service delivery.

This assignment contributes to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9 by supporting innovation and the development of modern digital infrastructure through the application of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning technologies.

Key Responsibilities

The Online Volunteers will work under the supervision of the Head – India Technology Hub and will support:

1. AI/ML Development
– Assist in developing, testing, and improving AI/ML models.
– Support AI-based feature development and automation.

2. Data Preparation
– Collect, clean, and prepare data for AI/ML models.
– Assist in model training and evaluation.

3. Documentation
– Document AI models, experiments, and project updates.
– Maintain technical documentation.

4. Learning and Collaboration
– Participate in code reviews and team discussions.
– Learn AI/ML best practices under the guidance of senior team members.

Tasks will be assigned based on ongoing project priorities. Each Online Volunteer will be responsible for one or more assigned AI/ML components and will contribute to their development, testing, documentation, and review throughout the 12-week assignment. Weekly virtual coordination meetings will be held to discuss progress and assign upcoming tasks.

Required Skills and Experience

Required Experience
• Basic knowledge of Python and AI/ML concepts.
• Familiarity with machine learning libraries (such as Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, or PyTorch) is an advantage.
• Basic understanding of data preprocessing and model training.
• Prior academic or personal AI/ML projects will be considered an asset.
